Live music at the celebration

Live music brings something a playlist cannot. A shehnai at the entrance often welcomes the guests, a folk group sings the songs of the family's own region at the haldi or the mehndi, and a Sufi or ghazal evening suits a reception where guests want to listen as well as dance. In many families, relatives and neighbours still gather to sing the traditional wedding songs, and musicians who accompany them gently are remembered fondly. A singer who knows the songs a family grew up with gets the elders and the young guests singing together.

Families ask how many musicians will come, how long each set lasts and how long the breaks are, and whether you bring your own sound system or share the DJ's. They ask whether you take requests, which languages you sing in and whether you can learn a family favourite before the day.
